1887 — 125 years ago: The towers of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Rock Island are being extended.
1912 — 100 years ago: Two fashionably dressed young women created a sensation on Second Avenue as they walked along the street while smoking gold-tipped cigarettes.
1937 — 75 years ago: Rock Island councilmen are considering a plan to establish a 1-hour parking limit in the business area after the first of the year.
1962 — 50 years ago: A gift offer of nearly $124,000 by Mrs. Charles Deere Wiman, of Moline, has launched Rock Island County on the road toward ownership of McLain's Zoo, near Coal Valley.

That's one reason the county's circuit clerk for the past 11 years won't be hanging his coat in the clerk's office Monday. His last official visit to that office was an afternoon-long open house in his honor Thursday.
