Chicago aldermen urge appeal of ruling on gun ban
Comment on this story
CHICAGO (AP) — Several members of the Chicago City Council say they hope Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan will appeal a federal court ruling tossing out Illinois' ban on concealed weapons.
They acknowledged Wednesday it might be a long shot, given the U.S. Supreme Court's recent history that includes striking down Chicago's handgun ban. Still, they say it's worth the effort.
Alderman Danny Solis says most Chicagoans don't believe that allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons will make communities any safer.
His remarks came a day after the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the state's ban on concealed weapons is unconstitutional.
But not all city council members agree. Alderman Howard Brookins says there's nothing wrong with the court's decision. He says it means law-abiding citizens will be able to protect themselves.
