The post-Christmas filing deadline for some candidates in the April municipal elections passed on Wednesday with no new candidates in Rock Island, Moline, East Moline or Silvis. A new Illinois law extended the deadline -- from 5 p.m. Dec. 24 to 5 p.m. Dec. 26 -- for some April election candidates to file their petitions. The deadline mostly affected candidates for positions in local school districts, community college districts and library, park and fire districts. In municipal elections, the change only affected candidates who intend to run as independents. As of Thursday, no new candidates had filed in the four cities, according to their clerk's offices or websites. Rock Island, however, has lost one of its mayoral candidates after the Rock Island electoral board ruled on Dec. 19 that Paula Rummels would not appear on the April 9 ballot. Ronald Day, a retired Rock Island resident, challenged Ms. Rummels' nomination papers, alleging she had not collected enough eligible signatures.Ms. Rummels has said she plans to request a judicial review of the electoral board's decision in Rock Island County Circuit Court. Write-in candidates have until Feb. 7, 2013, to file a declaration of intent with the respective city clerk.
