2nd Quad Cities Obama Inaugural Ball to be held January 21
For the second time, two longtime local organizers are putting together an Inaugural Ball for Quad Cities residents who want to celebrate the re-election of President Obama and the work of local people who volunteered on the fall campaigns. Sue Golden of Rock Island and Cathy Bolkcom of Le Claire are longtime friends and community organizers. After President Obama was elected in 2008, they were chatting over lunch about not being able to travel to Washington for the Inaugural Balls. So, they took matters into their own hands and quickly put together a full-blown Inaugural Ball for the QC---dinner, dancing and celebrating at the River Center in Davenport. Over 500 people showed up and they had to turn people away. Fast forward to 2012. On election night in November, according to Bolkcom "people started texting me immediately when President Obama was declared the winner to see if we were going to have another Ball." Though she had not given it any thought, she says, "of course, we had to have another Ball---people worked so hard on this election. We all deserve to have a great party."
The QC Inaugural Ball II will be on Monday, January 21 from 6 PM to midnight at the River Center in Davenport. The Hotel Blackhawk has offered discounted rooms for that night at a rate of $119 to encourage party goers to make a night of it and get a chance to experience the renovated historic hotel. Two of the QC's most popular local bands will play. For the early dinner hours, Anthony Catalfano, jazz pianist and composer, will play with his band and for the dancing hours, the Funktastic Five will play. Dinner will include beef, vegetarian lasagna, potatoes, rice, vegetables, salad and dessert. Beer and soft drinks will be provided, as well as a cash bar. If enough tickets are sold, there will also be a champagne pour. According to Lou Goral, Planning Chair, people should email firstname.lastname@example.org to order tickets.
Bolkcom stresses that this is a non-partisan event. "We are not affiliated with any political parties…all are welcome. We primarily want to celebrate the people who took citizenship seriously and worked hard to elect their candidates." This is also not a fundraiser. A committee of volunteers is organizing the event. The ticket price of $40 does not quite cover all the costs of the party, so sponsors are being sought to help pay for the extras including music, beverages and dessert. Any proceeds will go to benefit the homeless shelter of Churches United for women. In 2008, because of the sell-out crowd, the organizers were able to contribute $2400 to the Churches United food pantries.
