Letter: Time state recognized same-sex couples as married

Comment on this story

Dear Sen. Mike Jacobs and Rep. Patrick J. Verschoore:

As long time supporters, we strongly urge you to support same sex marriage.
We have been in a meaningful relationship since 1969 and have had many experiences at the hand of inequality and discrimination. After 42 years we took advantage of the laws permitting civil unions, however discrimination still exists. At the top if the list is our inability to be beneficiaries on our retirement plan through Tenneco and Case New Holland, thus depriving us of a 50 percent survivor benefit.

At issue is equality and civil rights with the state, the laws and regulations. Not religious sacraments and endorsements.

WE have done our fair share of contributing to society. Now it is time that our governments grant the same rights to same sex couples and clarify us as "MARRIED" in the eyes of the state.

It comes down to basic civil rights, which we have both worked for since the early 60s. Please do the right thing, and vote for equal marriage rights for same sex couples.
