Augustana College invites the community to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rock Island, Ill. –The annual community-wide celebration and musical tribute to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be held Saturday, January 19, at 6 p.m. in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave.). The free public event will celebrate the legacy of this great leader through powerful speakers, music and dance.
This year's celebration will focus on the theme of social justice and Dr. King's quote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
The celebration will include performances by the Community Gospel Chorus, the Westbrook Singers, Augustana's Gospel Choir, and the Truth Temple and Pentecostal Church of God Praise Dancers. The sending will be provided by the Reverend Dwight Ford, director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Rock Island.
Mark A. Anderson, assistant dean of students at Augustana, encourages the community to join in the celebration. "Centennial Hall provides a unique venue that allows the Quad-Cities community the opportunity to join together in commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King," he said.
Anderson also pointed out that many individuals and groups come together to make this annual event a reality. He thanked Alpha Kappa Alpha, Beauty Inside and Out, Black Hawk College, Davenport NAACP, Rock Island-Milan School District #41, I AM Productions, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, Pentecostal Church of God, Rock Island County NAACP, Quad City Minority Partnership, the Rock Island County Council on Addictions (RICCA), St. Ambrose University, Scott Community College, Trinity Regional Health System, Truth Temple Church, United Neighbors, Western Illinois University and WGVV/92.5 FM.
