Davenport Volunteer Connection helps veterans for Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service
Tuesday, January 15, 2013

As most Americans know, the third Monday in January was designated a federal holiday to celebrate Dr. King's life and work in 1983. Eleven years later, Congress named Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national day of service to encourage Americans to celebrate the day through community volunteerism and public service.

The Davenport Volunteer Connection (DVC), in partnership with Hooah! Quad Cities, Genesis Health System and local AmeriCorps members, is hosting a career development workshop for military veterans in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. On Monday January 21, 2013, "What's My Mission Now?, will feature an expert panel on topics including transitioning from military to civilian life, educational resources, building a "civilianized" résumé, and interviewing skills. Veterans will also have the opportunity to have their résumé reviewed by a professional in the human resources field.

"There are many career and educational opportunities currently available for veterans right here in our community and we want to do what we can to help them prepare", said Assistant City Administrator Tanisha Briley. "Dr. King's legacy is one of service to mankind and what better way to celebrate his day than to serve those who have served our country".

"What's My Mission Now?" will take place at the Genesis East - Adler Health Education Center located at 1236 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport Iowa (lower level of Genesis East Heart Institute) from 2:30pm to 5:00pm. Families are welcome and childcare will be provided by local AmeriCorps members.

The DVC is a City of Davenport initiative created to promote, support and celebrate volunteerism. In addition to matching volunteers with service opportunities in the community, the DVC celebrates four National Days of Service each year, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
