MOLINE -- The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Rock Island County on Tuesday approved a five-year contract with its union workers.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3744 represents about 47 airport employees. The new contract calls for a 2 percent annual wage increase each year of the contract through June 30, 2017.
AFSCME members also will pay 7.5 percent more each year for health insurance premiums. Right now, the monthly premium for a single employee is $92.60 and the monthly premium for a family is $208.12, according to the contract.
Bryan Johnson, assistant director of aviation, said theformer contract expired June 30, 2012. The one-year contract was put into place so the airport and union had time to work out a longer contract, he said, adding negotiations went well.
"There really was no sticking point," he said. "We were able to work everything out."
In other business:
-- Director of aviation Bruce Carter reported the total number of enplaning passengers in 2012 was 5.63 percent lower than in 2011, mainly because of weather canceling flights near the end of the year.In 2011, there were 423,070 passenger enplanements compared with 399,236 in 2012, he said, adding that Allegiant Air will offer additional flights for two months this spring and may add a destination later this year. "We are anticipating a very strong 2013."
-- Mr. Johnson said the airport, by early March, expects to have the three FAA approvals required before construction can start on a proposed Holiday Inn Express off Airport Road. The FAA must approve the airspace, release the land for non-aeronautical use and check that any environmental issues are addressed, he said.
-- The board accepted the appointment of Jim Bohnsack as a commissioner to replace Andy Gianulis, whose term expired. Mr. Bohnsack is representing the county. One commissioner each is appointed by the cities of Moline, Rock Island, East Moline, Silvis and Milan, and the county appoints three commissioners.
