Letter: Bills for overspending are due; sacrifice required
Comment on this story
President Obama recently nominated Jack Lew to be secretary of the Treasury. That is wrong, it should be secretary of Debt. With the national debt at $17 trillion, we don't know if there is any money left in the U.S. Treasury.
This president only wants to raise taxes and refuses to show the leadership to cut entitlement programs, which are the real problem. The president's raised taxes will fund the government about eight days. That's a joke, and doesn't come close to addressing the real problem.
Let's face it, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid have been great, especially to older Americans. However, we can no longer afford them without major changes.
If you have been on Social Security for a while, you have probably taken out many times more than you put in. The same thing for Medicare. The next generation will not enjoy the same benefits we have. We are going broke and our leaders, specially the president, will have to show the guts to admit it, and then do something about it.
As a people, we have always been optimistic about our future, but unless some major changes are made in our spending and debt, the future does not look bright. Everyone is going to have to make sacrifices for reckless spending our government has done in the past.
If this president is allowed to pursue his socialist agenda, with no regard to the massive debt he has put this country in, then there is no hope; we will end up like Europe.
