Letter: America moving away from self governance

Comment on this story

I received a letter recently that hit home with me as it expressed, better than I could, what I have observed for a number of years. Here is their observation:

"Last November's election revealed a lot about our Nation. But two things stand out more starkly than anything else.
"1. More people are motivated by emotions and feelings than by facts.
"2. Washington follows culture, not the other way around.

In other words, the election only revealed what was already true in America, namely that a majority of Americans no longer cherish the principles and values that anchored our nation to its noble past. Values like the family ... marriage as the Bible defines ... the sanctity of all life ... honor. .. integrity ... hard work ... respect for neighbors ... and more.

"Without question America is adrift in a sea of self-centeredness."

That is a sorry indictment, but is an obvious truth. We are in a steady move away from the spiritual underpinnings upon which our Constitution and Declaration of Independence were founded. It can only result in the loss of the freedoms which were the focus of the Founders.

They recognized that a Republic could only continue to function with a moral people who could self govern (not depend upon the government for our every need).

The less we worship and depend upon the God of the Bible, the more we depend instead on the government to provide all our needs.

The more powerful that government will become, the more freedoms will be taken away!
