The series: With victories in 13 of the last 17 meetings, the Vikings lead the all-time series 83-43. The two teams split last year's games, each winning at home. Elmhurst needed a buzzer-beater to win at home.
Game notes: Three straight losses Top 20 ranked teams – Illinois Wesleyan, North Central and Wheaton – are not the only reason Augie Coach Grey Giovanine promises a shakeup in his starters tonight. A lack of fire is as much the cause. Giovanine, who used the same starters – Tayvian Johnson, Ben Ryan, Brandon Kunz, Dan Jurgutis and Brandon Thompson in all 16 games thus far -- said that he won't know tonight's opening five until after today's noon workout. "I can tell you that it will not be the same lineup you have seen in our first 16 games,'' he said. "I wasn't happy with the effort in our last outing and we want to get back to rewarding guys that are giving the greatest effort and tuning into the assignments the best. When you get beat, you have to look at different combinations to move forward.'' ... The Vikings will have to contend with a big Elmhurst front-line that is anchored by Nick Sanford. The Bluejays are even on the boards, averaging and allowing 34.9 per game. Augie is +10.5 (37.5-27.0) on the boards. "Dealing with their front line is going to be a challenge,'' said Giovanine. ... Augie averages 72.7 points and gives up 63.1 per game. Elmhurst averages 67.8 points and allows 72.2.
Local links: Erik Dornfeld (6-7, Sr., Geneseo) has played in all 16 Bluejays games and started one. He is averaging 3.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 12.4 minutes per game.
Coaches comments: "We're just trying to get back to basics. We got away from our defensive energy and playing with great enthusiasm. A young team, you have the kind of success we had, and I think we got a little complacent. We've tried to get re-focused on the basic elements of the program which are competing on every possession. ... We've had a humbled group since Wednesday (86-67 home loss to Wheaton) and they've done a good job to get ready to move forward.'' -- Augie coach Grey Giovanine
Next: Augie is at Millikin (7-9, 3-2 CCIW, hosting IWU today) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
