The car rolled forward and crashed into a storefront window, with Mr. Villagomez chasingthe would-be thief and detaining him between two gas pumps until police, alerted by a store clerk, arrived.

Mr. Ostino was arrested at the scene. He remained in the Rock Island County Jail Thursday on a $125,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 29.

The gas station remains open, awaiting replacements for the shattered windows, an attendant said Thursday.
