The Illinois State Bar Association has launched a food and fundraising drive to provide one million meals to the needy.
John Thies, bar association president, visited Moline Thursday to promote "Lawyers Feeding Illinois" and tour the River Bend Foodbank with Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee.
Mr. Thies said the bar association and its 32,000 members have raised enough money to pay for 138,000 meals for the estimated 1.9 million Illinoisans who are considered food insecure.
One in five children in Illinois experience food insecurity, Mr. Thies said.
Although the bar association's campaign officially runs Feb. 18 to March 1, the lawyers already have started raising money for the initiative chaired by Mr. Thies' wife, Terry.
"We believe our efforts will help call attention to the ongoing problem of hunger as well as collect food and financial donations that directly help families and individuals in need," Mr. Thies said.
Lawyers Feeding Illinois has set up about 60 teams around the state to collect food and donations, Mr. Thies said, and courthouses also will collect donations. The food drive is being run in cooperation with Feeding Illinois, the state food bank association.
