Ballet Quad Cities will present its annual Valentine's Day program, 'Love Stories,' on Feb. 16 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Moline.
-- Year founded and mission: Ballet Quad Cities was founded in 1996 by executive director Joedy Cook. Our mission is to provide professional classical and contemporary dance to the entire community through outstanding performances, entertaining lecture-demonstrations and innovative educational outreach programs for people of all ages.
-- Major accomplishments in recent years:Over the past five years, we have steadily increased our operating budget and the number of professional dancers has increased to our current number of 13 highly-trained, adult professional dancers who have come to the Quad-Cities from across the United States. Last year, we formed a new partnership with Orchestra Iowa to bring live music accompaniment to two ballets during the 2012-13 season. We are expanding our audience reach across Iowa, performing six times this season in Cedar Rapids, and tour to Wheaton College in September 2013. "From the Pages of a Young Girl's Life" (spring 2012) and "Dracula" (fall 2012) were both filmed for airing by WQPT. "The Nutcracker" was filmed by Iowa Public Television in December 2012 to be broadcast over the next decade for the enjoyment of many Iowans for years to come.
-- Current venue (s):In the Quad-Cities, we perform at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Moline; The Adler Theatre, Davenport; and North High School's Holzworth Auditorium, Davenport. Our free community performance of "Ballet Under the Stars" is performed in June at the Lincoln Park Outdoor Theatre in Rock Island. In Cedar Rapids, we perform at the newly renovated Paramount Theatre.
-- Number of performances per year:Our production schedule may vary from year to year, but this year and next we will perform five productions in the Quad-Cities, plus school and public performances of "The Ugly Duckling." This season, we performed "The Nutcracker" in Cedar Rapids and will perform "Cinderella" there in April 2013. Next year, we plan to increase to three productions in Cedar Rapids.
-- Next performance: Our next performance will be "Love Stories," a mixed repertoire of 6 pieces by 4 choreographers, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Moline for two performances on Feb. 16 (1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.).
