Alexander Lumber Co. treats customers like family

Customers are "family" at Alexander Lumber Co.
Rona Durbin, kitchen and bath design specialist at Alexander, said the company has "the best customer service around. We service a very wide range of territory in and around the Quad-City area. All of our employees have a minimum of 20 years experience in the industry. ... We are family-owned and in turn, treat our customers like family."
The business will feature Starmark cabinetry, granite and Corian countertop shingles, composite decking, ornamental railings, exterior doors, and windows and siding at the 2013 Quad Cities Builders & Remodelers Association Home Show, Feb. 8-10, at the QCCA Expo Center, 2621 4th Ave., Rock Island.
Mrs. Durbin said she believes customers will like what Alexander has to offer, including standard lines of cabinetry in addition to semi-custom and custom cabinets. She said her job includes providing free in-home measurements and estimates for cabinetry, free design service, and free delivery.
She has been designing with Alexander Lumber for 13 years.
"We have several cabinet lines to offer our customers, which give us the ability to fit anyone's budget," she said. "I love my job, therefore customers will love the experience."
Alexander Lumber has a history of more than 120 years in lumber retailing.John Alexander opened the first family-owned lumberyard in Aurora, Ill., in 1891 with the aid of two partners and a loan of $5,000 from the Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago.
With the Aurora yard well established, John Alexander set his sights on expansion. He was able to negotiate a series of land leases with the railroads and set up lumberyards at relatively close intervals along the rail line. By the late 1920s, he was operating more than 100 of the so-called "line yards."
By 1929, John Alexander had bought out all his partners and acquired the Brittingham and Hixon Lumber Co. yards in Wisconsin, which Alexander Lumber Co. still owns and operates under the same name.
In 1944, John Alexander died and full management fell on the shoulders of John Alexander Jr.
As consumer trade grew in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the company added showrooms where paint, hardware and other products could be displayed.
In 1985, that growth reached Geneseo.
Mike France is general manager of the two facilities in Geneseo, one a retail showroom location at 209 W. Exchange St., and the other an overstock/reload center on Illinois 82, one mile north of Geneseo.
Alexander Lumber has the ability to help customers from start to finish with their projects, according to Mr. France, who is a 15-year veteran with the company.
To ensure a customer's next remodeling or new-home project begins on the right note, Alexander Lumber offers its own blueprint service."Selecting the right plans couldn't be easier," Mr. France said.
Volumes of plans are available for customers to browse through. A standard design may be chosen for a project, or aspects from multiple plans and ideas may be incorporated.
In addition to offering blueprint services to customers, Alexander Lumber also specializes in free in-home window-replacement measurements, free deck design, free job-site delivery, and free roof top shingle delivery. It offers a full line of Valspar paint, as well as lock keying, key making, kitchen design, and specialized projects – from fir flooring to cedar siding, all in stock and ready for delivery.
"We also have an outside sales department that is available to meet with customers or homeowners in their home or office at their convenience to discuss their projects," Mr. France said.
Alexander Lumber is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at both Geneseo locations.
Currently, Alexander Lumber Co. operates a total of 26 retail yards, 21 in Illinois and five in Wisconsin; truss and wall-panel plants in Cortland and LeRoy, Ill.; and a showroom/sales office in Twin Lakes, Wis.
