ATKINSON – Village trustees are working on a new contract with the Atkinson Landfill Co. for leachate disposal.
The landfill, owned by Branko Vardijan, Chicago, wants a permit to dispose of leachate -- liquid discharged from the landfill -- at the water/waste treatment plant at the northwest corner of Atkinson. Currently the leachate from the landfill is not disposed in Atkinson.
The board agreed to look into renegotiating the contract to include disposal of the leachate. AtkinsonMayor August Junior said the agreement between the village and the Atkinson Landfill Co. "is pretty outdated, and we need to bring it up to date."
Although no action was taken, a trustee asked if there is any vacant village-owned property that could be gifted to a Geneseo church, which would then build a house to be used for the care of foster children. Details of the request were not given.
In other business, the village board learned it may have a renter for the music room at the former Atkinson Grade School. The Regional Office of Education rents three large rooms in the building and is interested in an additional room for testing, if the village will install adequate heating and cooling for the room that will house computers.
Board members agreed to research the options to make the room sufficient for ROE needs.
