Letter: Melting Pot reminder of what makes nation great
Comment on this story
Your Q-C Melting Pot series is a great way to remind us again of where we live. It also is a fine example of American exceptionalism.
For example, here a Muslim and a Jewish immigrant can live and prosper side by side peacefully. Unlike many Muslim countries, America is not a "Jew-free" country.
This January, CNN reported 300 Yemini Jews leaving Yemen. Last October, 800 Ethiopian Jews left Ethiopia. Some 1,200 Ethiopian Jews had left earlier. From 1949 to 1954, more than 800,000 Jews had to leave their Muslim countries, like Syria, Iraq, Tunisia or Morocco, ("Big Lies," David Meir-Levi, p. 17).
Saudi Arabia has been Jew-free for centuries, as is Jordan today.
Where do these Jew-free" countries think Jews should live?
How poorer those countries are today. And how much more prosperous we are because of America's Jews and because of all the other immigrants who make up our "Melting Pot" of Americans in the Quad-Cities.
