HANOVER – Riley Walters was having a game to remember.
The Prophetstown senior had the sixth-ranked Prophets in position to knock off top-ranked and defending Class 1A state champion Freeport Aquin. That is until Arizona State-bound Sophie Brunner took over down the stretch, leading the Bulldogs to a 49-44 win Monday night in a Class 1A River Ridge Sectional semifinal.
Walters poured in 21 points for Prophetstown (27-4), which built a seven-point lead in the second quarter. But, Brunner scored 31, including eight in the fourth quarter, when the Bulldogs put the game away.
Karlie Stafford's buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the Prophets tied the score at 36 heading to the fourth quarter. The score was tied again at 39, and once more at 41 when Walters scored on an inbound play with 2:09 to play.
Brunner scored off a lob at the 1:43 mark. Moments later, an questionable call went against the Prophets, as a ball that appeared to go out of bounds off an Aquin player was ruled out on Prophetstown.
Aquin's Katie Stykel hit one of two free throws with 46 seconds left, and Brunner came up with the rebound on the second attempt. Brunner hit two free throws to make it 45-41 with 44 seconds remaining.
The Prophets' Cassie Reiley, who scored 14 points, hit two free throws with 34 seconds left, and Walters nearly came up with a steal. Aquin's Madelyn Reining hit one of two free throws with 21 seconds left to make it 46-43.
A Prophetstown turnover and intentional foul sent Brunner to the line, where she knocked both down with nine seconds left. With the bonus possession due to the intentional foul, Brunner again was fouled and hit one of two free throws to make it 49-43 with just 7.8 seconds left.
Corrie Reiley hit one of two free throws to finish the scoring.
Aquin jumped in front 9-3, but Prophetstown came back to take a 13-12 lead late in the first quarter and led 16-14 after one. The Prophets went up 23-16 with 3:49 left in the first half after a three-point play by Cassie Reiley and a pair of free throws from Walters.
The Bulldogs came back to tie it at 26 at the break when Brunner scored on her second putback try of her own miss.
