Dorothy Jean Lerch, 85, of Bettendorf, formerly of Coal Valley, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Pius X Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials can be made to Trinity VNA.
Jean was born April 25, 1927, in Quincy, Ill., the daughter of Russell and Ophelia Kemper Myers. She married Donald R. Lerch on Feb. 7, 1953, in Rock Island.
Mrs. Lerch was a copy writer and on-air personality for WHBF TV and radio station for 10 years. She later worked as a trainer for her husband's office equipment business, Lerch & Thonn Inc. She was corporate vice president and secretary when she retired in 1998 after 28 years.
Jean's interest in speech and radio began at Quincy High School, where she graduated in 1945. She earned a B.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1949. While there, she was president of Currier Hall, a residence for women, and was a member of Zeta Phi Eta, an honorary speech fraternity, and Mortar Board, a senior honorary society for women.
Jean was a member of St. Maria Goretti Parish, Coal Valley, Oakwood Country Club, Coal Valley and Lexington Country Club, Fort Myers, Fla. In the past, she was a longtime member of the Junior Board of Rock Island, Trinity VNA and was chairman of the 25th Mardi Gras Ball. Jean enjoyed bridge, golf and cooking.
Survivors include her husband, Donald; daughters, Tracey (Robert) Cantarutti, Palatine, Ill., Debra Powell, Rock Island, and Tina Jacobs, Mount Carroll, Ill.; six grandchildren, Michael, Angela and Alexandra Cantarutti, Jennifer Powell and Rebecca and Madison Jacobs; great-granddaughters, Francesca and Olivia; and sisters, Marilyn Schmidt and Terry Moore, both of Quincy. She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell.
