Former Davenport alderman's trial expected to begin Wednesday

A jury was selected on Tuesday and the trial for former Davenport alderman Keith Edwin Meyer is expected to get under way this morning with opening statements.

Mr. Meyer, 71, of Davenport, is representing himself on a misdemeanor charge ofassault while displaying a weapon, after he allegedly confronted a neighbor in November while armed with a gun.

Scott County Circuit Judge Cheryl Traum dismissed the the six men and eight women in the jury at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Assistant Scott County Attorney Will Ripley told the judge that, barring opening statements and cross examination by Mr. Meyer running long, he anticipates the prosecution will conclude its case by early afternoon.

Mr. Meyer served two terms as 3rd Ward alderman from 2003 until his defeat by Bill Boom in 2007.
