A trial for former Davenport alderman Keith Meyer was postponed Wednesday and is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. today.

Mr. Meyer, 71, of Davenport, is representing himself on amisdemeanor charge of assault while displaying a weapon after an alleged confrontation with his neighbor last November. Mr. Meyer is accused of threatening the man with a shotgun.

A jury of six men and eight women was picked Monday and Tuesday, and the trial was expected to start with opening statements Wednesday.

Mr. Meyer said it was delayed a day to give a court reporter time to transcribe several audio clips he intends to present as evidence at the trial.

Mr. Meyer, who is hard of hearing, needs a court reporter to transcribe conversations onto a computer screen during court proceedings.

Assistant Scott County Attorney Will Ripley said he anticipates the prosecution's case will be presented in half a day, barring no lengthy opening statements or cross-examination by Mr. Meyer.

Mr. Meyer said Wednesday he plans to call five to 10 witnesses.
