Jason Kirby confirmed via email that he was approved as the Canton High School football coach on Wednesday night. Kirby spent the previous three years as the Rockridge head coach.

Efforts to reach Kirby were unsuccessful.

"He's been an asset to our football program," Rockridge athletic director Scott Daly said of Kirby, who went 21-9 with three playoff appearances in his tenure. "He's been able to turn our program around the last three years. It's definitely a loss."

Daly said the district "will start our search as soon as we can get the process going following the proper school procedures."

All internal and out-of-district candidates will be considered for the position, Daly said.

"We want someone who is qualified, works well with kids and has a good football background," Daly said.

Kirby replaces Justin Miller, who resigned after four seasons, in Canton. Since the Little Giants last qualified for the playoffs in 2005, they have gone 12-51.
