Geneseo, Mercer County advance to state wrestling finals

BLOOMINGTON -- The Geneseo and Mercer County wrestling teams advanced to the state championship matches at the dual-team state tournament on Saturday.

Geneseo advanced to the Class 2A finals against top-ranked Lombard Montini after a 58-13 win over Antioch in the semifinals. Earlier in the day, the Maple Leafs topped Bloomington, 38-33, in the quarterfinals.

Mercer County will face top-ranked Dakota in the Class 1A championship. In the semifinals, the Golden Eagles earned a 57-14 win over Litchfield.

Both programs are wrestling in their first-ever championship duals. The last Illinois Quad-Cities team to reach the finals since Alleman in 2005. Moline is the last local team to win a state championship, capturing the 1996 Class AA crown.

The championship duals start at 6 p.m.

Both the Geneseo and Mercer County wrestling teams will earn state hardware today.

Geneseo advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum after a 38-33 win over Bloomington. The victory puts the Maple Leafs into the semifinals against Antioch.

The Maple Leafs are guaranteed the school's first non-football state sports trophy since the girls' basketball team took fourth in the 1987 Class AA state tournament. The last time a Geneseo boys' team won a non-football state trophy was 1893 when it took third at the state track meet.

Mercer County earns a Class 1A state trophy for the second consecutive season after dispatching Plano, 40-25, in the state quarterfinals. The Golden Eagles, who took third a year ago, meet Litchfield in the semifinals.

Both semifinal duals start at 2 p.m.

This is the first time since the Illinois High School Association started the dual-team state tournament in 1983 that two Quad-Cities teams will earn a state trophy.
