Letter: Silvis city clerk backing Johnson for 1st Ward spot

Comment on this story

I am the Silvis city clerk and I endorse Mike Johnson in the 1st Ward. I am a 35-year resident of the 1st Ward and I have been represented by some of the best the city had to offer.
I thank Bob Cervantes for his service to our city but do not want an alderman who is part of the "old guard" and not interested in the best interests of the 1st Ward or does not have time to attend meetings that effect the city and 1st Ward.

I do not feel attending parades is a prerequisite for being alderman. Mike Johnson is a resident who has shown he is interested in the city and the 1st Ward.

Last summer, during the peak heat wave, Mike went throughout the city and watered the flowers at Hero Street, Silvis Heights Park, the entire downtown area and the "Sisters Park" area on the South end of 10th Street.

Mike is active in the cleanup efforts promoted by the city and has not only worked the e-waste events but has brought his veterans group into the community to help with these efforts.
As far as Hero Street remembrances, I feel Mike has the heart of a true veteran and really understands the solemnity and respect that the events at Hero Street Park require and deserve.
Mike is a Vietnam combat veteran, Purple Heart recipient and a retired union electrician and I know he has had to make a lot of tough decisions throughout his adult life. I feel Mike Johnson will make an excellent citizen representative.

Jim Nelson,
1st Ward resident,
Silvis City Clerk
