Winter storm throws crimp into area basketball postseason dates

Tuesday's heavy snow also brought with it a round of postponements involving local boys' basketball teams across the board.

The Class 4A United Township Regional semifinal between top-seeded Rock Island and fourth-seeded Moline will now be played Wednesday night at 7:30. The other semifinal between second-seeded Peoria Richwoods and third-seeded Pekin is Thursday, with the championship still being played Friday night at 7:30.

"The interest of fan and student safety and the fact there is a winter storm warning is why we made the decision," UT athletic director Mike Tracey said.

All postseason tournaments that originally had single-game nights were pushed back a day. Tracey said he wanted to schedule a doubleheader tonight so each advancing team would have a day to prepare for the final, but the Illinois High School Association ruled that the tournaments had to follow the original format.

Because of that, one game will be played Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in four postseason tournaments involving local teams.

The Class 2A sectional at Farmington and the Class 1A sectionals at Brown County and Lanark Eastland follow that schedule as well. Rockridge now will meet Minonk Fieldcrest in the Farmington Sectional semifinal on Thursday with the championship set for Friday.

In the other semifinal, Monmouth-Roseville will play Tremont Wednesday night.

"It's not a very good situation, but what can we do about it?" Rockridge coach Toby Whiteman said. "There's nothing we can do. ... It is what it is. Those are things we can't control."

Wethersfield had its Brown County Sectional semifinal against Mendon Unity pushed back to Thursday with the championship on Friday.

Erie now will play Lanark Eastland in the Class 1A Lanark Eastland Sectional semifinal Wednesday night instead of Tuesday. The championship is 7:30 on Friday.

In Class 3A, the Galesburg Regional semifinals were pushed back a day. Fourth-seeded Alleman will meet top-seeded Quincy Notre Dame Wednesday night at 6. Galesburg and Canton will play at 7:30. The final is still on Friday evening.

"I always talk to the kids about adversity," Whiteman said. "When bad things happen, you've got to deal with it."
