Fans of the Rock Island County Fair board, hoping to bring fair goers some heat relief, are moving the annual event up a month, to June 25-29.
Board presidentBill McKinley said extreme heat the past two years has contributed to low attendance, with only a few hundred attending last year. The glut of area events in the month of July was another factor in the decision to move the event, said Mr. McKinley.
"There were other state and national events that came into play," said Mr. McKinley. "In an effort to accommodate fairgoers and livestock judging, we made sure we didn't conflict with anyone else."
Mr. McKinley said the move may not be permanent. The fair board will re-evaluate dates again next year.
Popular attractions will remain. The CDAC carnival will return with about dozen rides, including a larger ferris wheel. Also featured will be a tractor pull, bull riding and mutton busting, demolition derby, fireworks, and the fair queen pageant. Mr. McKinley also expects numerous food and arts and crafts vendors.
Celebrity showmanship is returning after a five-year absence, he said. The event involves local celebrities showing livestock. Both the animal and person are judged in their showmanship.
"We're a strong supporter of Future Farmer's of America and 4H," said Mr. McKinley. "We want people to come out and have fun."
