Effects of the Sequestration on the Quad Cities
The Quad City Federation of Labor to host forum on effects of Across-the-Board Budget cuts to Quad City Residents and Economy
Rock Island, Illinois, March 14, 2013 –Across the board budget cuts, called sequestration, will lead to the loss of over one million American jobs this year and many more jobs over the next decade. It will also result in dramatic reductions in funding for education and health and human service providers. The Rock Island Arsenal – the largest employer in Eastern Iowa – is facing up to 22 furlough days for the remainder of the year as they grapple with the cuts.
Join the Quad City Federation of Labor as it hosts a community forum on the effects of Sequestration right here in the Quad Cities.
Speakers include: Steve Beck, Federal employee on Arsenal Island with AFGE 15; Tom Seymour, President of the Quad Cities Alliance for Retired Americans; and Sandy Walters, Executive Director of Humility of Mary Housing. Each speaker will highlight how the sequester cuts will affect the various sectors of our local and national economy.
The solution is to repeal sequestration - not replace it - so we can put these manufactured crises behind us and focus on the urgent problems of putting America back to work, raising wages and reducing economic inequality. We will be urging attendees to contact their representatives in Congress to demand the repeal of the sequestration.
