DAVENPORT, Iowa -- March 18, 2013 -- Children of Genesis Health System employees pursuing educations in health and the sciences will be eligible for financial assistance from an exciting new scholarship program.
The ASSET Scholarship Program for Children of Genesis Employees will award four $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors or students already in two-year or four-year programs in health, wellness or STEM (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics) in the 2013-2014 academic year.
The Genesis Medical Center, Davenport Auxiliary, a major contributor, and Genesis employees have provided the initial funding of the ASSET Scholarship Program for Children of Genesis Employees. In the future, the hope is to endow the scholarship fund and to increase scholarship values, or make the scholarships renewable.
"This is a wonderful win-win for Genesis and for the accomplished children of our Genesis employees,'' said Doug Cropper, president and CEO of Genesis Health System, who initiated and has been funding the scholarship program since arriving at Genesis six years ago. "The name ASSET is appropriate for this program. Genesis employees are important assets to the mission of Genesis Health System and by funding these scholarships, we hope some of their children will also return to Genesis as valued employees.
"It will be rewarding and exciting for Genesis to be able to recognize the successes of the children of employees. Who doesn't enjoy seeing their children be recognized for their success?
"But there is more to it than just recognition. Science-based fields, including health care, will need doctors, nurses, engineers and inventors for the future. By assisting the children of Genesis employees in pursuit of educations in these specialized fields, we hope to attract these bright minds back to Genesis in the future, or retain them in the region served by Genesis."
Students must live in the 10-county Genesis Health System service area. There is no Genesis work requirement associated with the scholarships. The first scholarships will be for one year and are not renewable.
Details and applications are accessible at genesishealth.com/scholarships. Deadline for the first ASSET Scholarships is April 25.
