Illinois, Iowa crown national wrestling champs

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Illinois sophomore Jesse Delgado won the 125-pound NCAA wrestling title on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Delgado captured the championship after a 7-4 win over Penn State's Nico Megaludis.

Delgado is Illinois' first national wrestling champion since Moline's Matt Lackey won 10 years ago. Illinois, which finished ninth with 45.5 points, never had a 125-pound champion before Saturday. The Fighting Illini had Conrad Polz (165 pounds) and Jordan Blanton (174) snag All-America honors.

Derek St. John became Iowa's 52nd national champion after a 3-2 win over Northwestern's Jason Welch in the 157-pound title. St. John's title helped the Hawkeyes (73 points) to a fourth-place finish.

Iowa's Tony Ramos (133), Mike Evans (174) and Ethen Lofthouse (184) each earned All-America honors.

Penn State had two national champions, helping it to a third consecutive team title. The Nittany Lions tallied 123.5 points, outlasting Oklahoma State by four. Penn State's titles were won by Ed Ruth (184) and Quentin Wright (197).

Also winning titles were Ohio State's Logan Stieber (133), Oklahoma's Kendrick Maple (141), Cornell's Kyle Dake (165) and Minnesota's Tony Nelson (285). Oklahoma State received titles from Jordan Oliver (149) and Chris Perry (174).
