A 41-year old Mercer County man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
James S. Gladwin pleaded guilty to the Class X felony charge in February. He was sentenced by Judge Gregory Chickris on Monday.
Mr. Gladwin was accused of committing the crime of sexual penetration with a girl under the age of 13 on Aug. 1, 2005. Under a plea agreement, two other counts of predatory criminal sexual assault were dismissed.
At Monday's sentencing hearing, Mercer County Assistant State's Attorney Meeghan Lee presented a letter from the victim stating she was sexually assaulted up to 2005.
"While we always want extended prison in such cases, the 10 years will give our young victim time to move on without fear," Ms. Lee said. "She (victim) is a brave young woman who was prepared to go through a jury trial to make sure the defendant went to prison.
Because of the nature of the crime, Mr. Gladwin must serve 8 1/2 years actual time. He also received three years of mandatory supervised release.
Mr. Gladwin had a prior conviction for sexual abuse for which he received three years in prison.
Ms. Lee said Mr. Gladwin also is facing a charge of felony aggravated battery of a fellow inmate at the Mercer County Jail.
