An inadvertent e-mail blast raised the hopes of golfers in the Quad-Cities this week.
That e-mail alerted golfers that tee times were being taken for play at Fyre Lake Golf Club, signaling the long-awaited opening of the Jack Nicklaus Design Group layout in Sherrard. However, it turned out to be a bit premature as the course has yet to open.
When it will be open for play is still not set. New owner Todd Raufeisen said in an e-mail that the course could be open by Friday.
Head professional Justin Stotts hesitated to pinpoint an opening date. He said the false starts have left too many disappointed as they anxiously await the course's opening that has been on hold for three years due to financial issues and a bankruptcy under previous investors.
Stotts reports that the course "is ready to be played'' and has even been mowed already this week. He said there are "smaller issues that I had no idea about'' that are holding up the opening along with the unseasonably cold weather.
"We have some lift station (irrigation) issues that are not ours and weather has delayed concrete work, but we will open,'' Raufeisen offered in an e-mail.
Raufeisen has said that plans are to install a parking lot, pave a bag drop area, and get cart paths poured leading from the parking lot to the clubhouse.
Stotts also reported that golf carts are being delivered to the facility this week and that products – food and merchandise – are ordered for the clubhouse that is fully furnished and open daily.
Stotts understands that golfers are anxious to play the new course and keep wondering "if it will open.''
"We hate to keep changing the dates,'' said Stotts. "It was unfortunate that that e-mail went out and got people excited. We really hope to be open by the middle of the month if not sooner.''
Golfers can call the clubhouse at 309-644-4575 for further updates and to check on when the course will be open for play.
