Walter J. Martens, 95, of Reynolds, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge. Visitation was Friday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Taylor Ridge. Memorials may be left to the Zion Lutheran Church.
Walter was born on Jan. 3, 1918, in Lincoln County, Neb., the son of John and Marie Paben Martens.
He graduated from Cozad High School, Neb., and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific Theater.
He married Erma Seitz on Sept. 14, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge, where they are members. Walter farmed for many years, and worked in the experimental department of Rock Island J.I. Case Company for 13 years. He was a mechanic for Mueller Farm Implement, DeWitt Implement and the Rockridge School District. Since his retirement in 1988, he was able to devote more time to his woodworking hobby, producing many fine pieces of furniture and novelties.
Survivors include his wife, Erma; children and spouses, Dennis and Phyllis Martens, Andalusia, Sandra and Dean Young, Andalusia, Dallon and Karen Martens, South Bend, Ind., and Esther and Mark Anders, Westland, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Hedquist, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Martens; sister, Elvera Seedorf; and two infant siblings.
