Rock Island City Council approves 3rd Avenue work

The Rock Island City Council has approved $206,000 for the reconstruction of 3rd Avenue from 24th to 25th Street.
The project bid, from A.J. Excavating, was approved at Monday's city council meeting by a 6-0 vote, with Ald. Jason Jones, 5th Ward, not present.
Also at Monday's meeting,the council approved a $336,500 bid from Walter D. Laud for the 2013 Rock Island Parkway improvements project. Aldermen also approved a bid of $31,377 from Walter D. Laud for the Velie Drive sub-grade stabilization project.
Aldermen also approved a bid of $18,200 from EnviroNet Inc., for an environmental investigation on part of Parking Lot C at Illinois 92 and 20th Street.
An apartment complex is planned for the site. City documents state the site may require remediation work because of lead and mercury contamination.
In other business, aldermen:
— Approved a $69,300 bid from Peterson Parking Lot Striping for the city's 2013 pavement marking program.
— Voted in favor of a $16,755 bid from Kymbyl Komplete Kare Inc., for the city's 2013 Weed Control Spraying Program.
— Agreed to remove handicapped parking spots at 504 7th St., 501 9th St. and 3111 9th St. because they were no longer required at the locations. Aldermen also approved a request to install a handicapped parking place at 2615 5½th Ave.
— Voted in favor of a request from The Arc of the Quad Cities Area to install a loading zone in front of 2850 9th St.
