United Steelworkers Local 105 to hold Memorial Service in Honor of Workers Who Died on the Job
Community Calls for Good Jobs and Safe Jobs for All Working People
Bettendorf, Iowa—On April 26that 4:30pm, working families, faith leaders and local officials will gather at the United Steelworkers Local 105 Hall for a Memorial Service to commemorate those who have perished or suffered injuries or illness on the job, and call on Congress to create safe jobs for all working people. Alcoa Davenport Works – Joint Safety and Health Committee is sponsoring this service to recognize the workers who are no longer with us due to a work-related accident. Janice Payne will sing a solo and members from AFM Local 67 will play TAPS
In workplaces across America, workers continue to be exposed to toxic chemicals like asbestos
and safety hazards such as unguarded machinery. We will gather in solidarity with the families of those lost and injured on the job to renew the fight for stronger regulationsand protections for all working people. The entire community is invited to join us.
In 2011, 4,600 workers lost their lives on the job and another 50,000 died from occupational diseases. That's a total of 150 workers dying each and every day. Between Iowa and Illinois, 270 workers never came home to their families. When the 2012 data is released later this year, we can only hope that this number has decreased.
