Public hearing set on proposed enterprise zone expansion to aid Trimble funeral home

MOLINE -- A public hearing on April 23 will give the public a chance to comment on a proposed expansion to the Illinois Quad Cities Enterprise Zone that would benefit Trimble Funeral and Cremation Centers.
Moline aldermen gave preliminary approval Tuesday to the request, whichallows the city council to consider the expansion after two readings of the resolution. The council likely will vote on the request in May.
According to Moline economic development manager Pat Burke, Trimble requested the expansion to include the property at 701 12th St., Moline. The company plans to relocate the funeral home and cremation center there and also expand its operations and build CityView, a reception center.
Trimble must move from its current location in Moline because the Illinois Department of Transportation is acquiring the property for the new Interstate 74 corridor realignment that eventually will include a new bridge.
Moline participates in the enterprise zone with East Moline, Silvis, Milan and Rock Island County. Mr. Burke said all of the municipalities have to approve the expansion, along with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
If approval is granted, the company could be eligible for state and city incentives, such as a state sales tax exemption on building materials purchased in Illinois and waived building permit fees.
Mr. Burke said enterprise zones were created to encourage reinvestment. Trimble's relocation and expansion will allow the company to retain 10 full- and part-time employees and create up to 25 new jobs. In addition, Moline will retain a 100-plus-year-old business, he said.
Ald. Kevin Schoonmaker, 6th Ward, asked if the only fiscal impact to the city is the building permit fees.City staffers estimated the loss of fees would be no more than $5,000.
Mayor Don Welvaert said the Trimble project will not receive tax-increment-financing incentives or a property tax abatement.
The public hearing begins at 6:45 p.m. on the second floor of Moline City Hall, 619 16th St.
