WVIK events for April and May

Press release submitted by Jay Pearce

Spring is finally springing! And there is so much going on at your public radio station that it will take at least FIVE newsletters to cover it all!

In a nutshell... it's Public Radio Music Month. Public radio stations like WVIK are the last bastions of classical, jazz and many other genres of music in many communities, including ours. The Quad City Symphony Orchestra's new executive director stopped by for a visit. Come meet him for yourself at our next Wine Social April 18 at The Grape Life in Davenport. And you can help us celebrate a successful Spring Pledge Drive!

Speaking of that, it is listener support that makes it possible for the community to have classical music, including our symphony, on the air. And in many communities, including ours, public radio is the only outlet for local news reporting on the radio.

Again, thanks to listener support. I'm proud to report that your local news department has won awards for excellence in both Illinois and Iowa again this year! You may have heard me lately on Morning Edition. I am taking on the role of host to allow Michelle more time to attend to the important news of the day. Let me know what you think. We have added more discussion of local issues to the schedule with a replay of The Cities on Saturdays at noon. And I hope you are enjoying RiverWay Stories each Saturday morning at 8:34. Much more next month.

April Wine Social Thursday in Davenport

Come join the staff of WVIK and our special guest, Ben Loeb of the Quad Cities Symphony! Socialize with us and enjoy a glass of wine! The Wine Social will be from 5- 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the Grape Life, 3402 Elmore Ave., Davenport. We hope to see you there!

Fund drive continues through Thursday

The WVIK Spring On-Air Fund Drive continues through April 18. We have had some great on-air guests, including the new executive director of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, Ben Loeb, as well as other community leaders. We would also like to thank our sponsors of the fund drive — the Quad-City Times, A.D. Huesing and Donut Delite. If you haven't contributed yet this year, please call WVIK at (309) 794-7500 or go online at wvik.org. Thanks!

May 16th reception, dinner will honor Don Wooten

Former Illinois State Sen. Don Wooten, the founder of WVIK public radio station at Augustana College, will receive an honorary doctorate from Augustana College during its graduation ceremonies, May 19.

WVIK and his friends will celebrate starting at 5 p.m. on May 16 with "And Another Thing" (the name of his Sunday newspaper column) dinner and reception in the Augustana College Center Dining Room, 3750 7th Ave., Rock Island. This event will help raise funds for WVIK; the $35 tickets include dinner and two complimentary glasses of wine.

Event organizers are seeking memorabilia for a light-hearted retrospective about Mr. Wooten as well as sponsorships to underwrite the dinner's cost. Ticket sales and additional donations will go toward funding the mission of public service Don established at WVIK.

Photos, stories, video clips, and other memorabilia can be sent to Jennifer Blohm; for details, call (309) 794-7552 or email jenniferblohm@wvik.org. She also can take ticket orders for the dinner. You may purchase tickets online also.
