Paul L. Huizenga, Erie, will be 80 years young on Sunday, April 28. A family celebration is being held in his honor.
Paul was born in Newton Township, rural Erie, to Justus and Winnie Heun Huizenga. He is a proud member of the Erie High School Class of 1951. From 1953-1955 Paul served in the U.S. Army, 18 months in Korea. On May 12, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ann Fiet, in Fulton. They will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary in two weeks. Since 1962, they have owned and operated Huizenga Plumbing.
Paul is a member and past president of Erie Rotary Club. He also is a member of the American Legion. He was formerly mayor of Erie, a town board member and a volunteer firefighter. He and Ruth belong to Erie Evangelical Free Church.
Their children are Cindy and Mark Moore, Coal Valley; Craig and Denise Huizenga, Erie; and Curt Huizenga, Erie. In 1976-77, Paul and Ruth had the privilege of being host parents for Japanese exchange student Kinuyo (Toyoda) Suyama, of Osaka, Japan. Kinuyo is married and has two adult children.
Grandchildren are Lindsey and Michael Freburg, Rock Island; Jared and Sarah Moore, Rock Island; and Stacey McReynolds, Erie. There are eight great-grandchildren, Michael and Anna Freburg; Esther, Abigail and Lydia Moore; Hayden and Peyton Umstead and Deslan McReynolds.
