375th Anniversary of the New Sweden Colony

The American Scandinavian Association at Augustana is hosting a live webcast May11 to celebrate the 375th anniversary of the New Sweden Colony. In 1638 the tall ship, Kalmar Nyckel, arrived on the Delaware coast with a crew of Swedes and Finns who then established the New Sweden Colony. The local commemoration will consist of a live webcast of the 375th Jubilee dinner in Wilmington, Delaware. It will be shown in Room 102 in Hanson Hall of Science, Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with the King of Sweden, H.M. Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and Finland's Speaker of Parliament, Eero Heinäluomo and his spouse Satu Sitonen-Heinäluomo scheduled to arrive at 7:00 p.m. concluding about 10:00 p.m. The local event will be a casual "come and go" with cookies and coffee available in the foyer. A free will donation for the refreshments will be welcomed. ASA extends a special invitation to descendants of the New Sweden Colony and members of the Swedish Colonial Society.
