Jesse White awards more than $1 million in 'Back to Books' grants

Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded more than $1 million in "Back to Books" grants to 230 Illinois libraries to acquire fiction and/or non-fiction books, learning CDs and DVDs and other educational materials.

Libraries submitted applications specifying the types of books and other materials they would purchase if they received funding. Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 per library, made possible by a combination of funds from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and state of Illinois library funds.

Local recipients included:

-- United Township High School,East Moline, $5,000

-- Geneseo Public Library District, $5,000

--Hampton School District, $4,000

-- Kewanee Public Library, $4,500

-- Wethersfield School District, Kewanee, $5,000

-- Bureau Valley Community School District, Manlius, $4,552

-- Moline Public Library, $2,500

-- Moline School District, $5,000

-- Sherrard Public Library, $5,000.
