Let's Be Thankful!
By Emily Lewis
Seventh grade
Thankfulness is being happy for what you have and understanding what a great opportunity it is to have it. "One man's junk is another man's treasure." Most Americans don't realize that what they have is treasure.

Some of my treasures are my parents and my brother. I have a loving mother and father, and they both support me. Whatever I do, wherever I go, they'll be there for me. That's why I'm thankful for my parents. My brother is also very supporting. He is in the Air Force so I don't get to see him every day, but I'm very thankful I do get to see him. Most families don't get to see their siblings who are in the military. I know that Air Force police don't get to go home for the holidays.

Some spiritual gifts I'm thankful for are love, joy, and getting raised in a Christian home. My parents, grandma, and my brother love me very much. My family is never sad, and we are always laughing. My family has always been a Christian family, my mom and dad were raised in a very good home.

I am also very thankful for my house, electricity, food, water, and clothes. These are more things that some people don't have. God has blessed my family very much. He has given us a good place to live. He has given my parents good jobs, and we also have many things we don't need but are nice to have. I thank God for all he has done.
Many Americans need to thank God for what they have. That is why I urge you to be thankful and to remember what God has blessed you with.

The Pledge
By Abigail Kongkousonh
Sixth grade
Why do we say the Pledge? What do the words mean? Who wrote it? I did some research and found the answers to some of the questions about the Pledge of Allegiance.
Why do we say the Pledge?
We say the Pledge to acknowledge the freedom we have in the United States.
What do the words mean?
The Pledge is a promise of allegiance to the symbol of our country. I promise to support the government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Who was the Pledge written by and why?
It was written by Francis Bellamy. He wrote it and sent it out to schools everywhere for Columbus Day in 1892.
Has anything been deleted or changed?
Yes, the original Pledge was "I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all." The words "my flag" were changed to "the flag" in 1923 because foreign-born people might think it is referring to their birth country. "Of the United States of America" was added after "the flag" the same year. Francis Bellamy didn't like the change, but his protests were ignored. In 1954, the words "under God" were added.
There has been debate on whether to change the Pledge once again. It may be changed to 'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all, born and unborn. Another option for change is "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with Liberty, Justice, and equality for all.
In conclusion, the Pledge was written to acknowledge the freedom we have in the United States, the best country in the world!

When I think of thankfulness I think of being content with what you have. We should be thankful because God has blessed America greatly. I should also be thankful because God has blessed my life in a lot of ways.
One of the ways God has blessed me is spiritually. I'm thankful that Jesus died on the cross for my sins so I can have salvation. I'm thankful for God's mercy and grace. I'm thankful that he loves us and will never abandon us. I'm also thankful that we have the Bible so we can learn from God's Word.
I am also blessed materially. I have a home for shelter when it rains and snows. I have heat to keep me warm. I have clothes to wear and jackets, hats, and gloves to keep me warm. I'm thankful for electricity so we can have power. I'm also thankful for plenty of food to eat so I'm not hungry.
God has also blessed me family-wise. I have a mom, dad, and two brothers. My family loves me and cares for me. They are always there for me when I need help. My mom and dad teach me things I need to know. We do lots of fun things together and I have a lot of fun with them. I'm glad God gave me the family I have.
Finally, I have learned that I have a lot to be thankful for and that God has really blessed my life. We need to remember that God has blessed America and we should all be thankful for that.

Find a Pet
By Luis Henry
Seventh grade
Pets always try to endear themselves to people. They do everything they can to earn our love and trust. They protect us. They comfort us when we need comforting. They amuse us when we are bored or need something to do. Pets do their best to be our friends.
One thing that pets will do is to get excited when we come home from work or school or from the mall. Some dogs jump around barking, whimpering, and whining. Cats will sometimes come to you and purr, and maybe paw at your leg. A bird jumps and starts to fly around squawking. If you have a parrot or another talking bird, it may say, "Welcome home ... welcome." Whatever pet you have will be glad to see you.
Another thing that pets do is to protect us. Dogs bark if someone tries to break in or they might even chase them off. A cat comes to you and starts meowing or clawing at you. A bird starts squawking or screaming.
If you are sad or depressed or just not feeling well, your pet will be there for you. A dog will lie down next to you and try to coax you to play. If you're bored, pets can entertain you. A dog will chase his tail, just hope he doesn't catch it and bury it!), or he will play with you. Cats will sometimes play if they feel like it.
Pets can endear themselves to you. So next time you are bored, sad, or just need someone to talk to ... go find your pet!

Good leadership is very important. Without a good leader, families, cities, and even entire nations can make very unwise decisions and may even go bankrupt. A good leader does not frequently make unwise decisions. He does not do what the wrong crowd is doing. Also, a good leader trusts God to lead him in the right direction. He tries not to think of what he wants, but of what God wants.
A stable leader helps others to succeed. He doesn't want others to fail in order to make himself look better. He encourages others to succeed because he appreciates good competition.
A competent leader does not desire to always be in the spotlight. He does not take satisfaction in getting all of the attention. He does not tell himself that he is so great. He tries to set more difficult goals and strives to achieve them. Also, a good leader always stays positive. He doesn't let a minor setback ruin his enthusiasm.
In conclusion, good leadership is extremely important in life. If all of us had a dependable leader, the world would be a better place.
