1888 -- 125 years ago: The Rev. W.S. Marquis, of Broadway Presbyterian Church, officiated yesterday at the cornerstone laying exercises for South Park Presbyterianmission.
1913 -- 100 years ago: The charter roll of the recently organized Rock Island Woman'sClub has closed with a registration of 621 members.
1938 -- 75 years ago: The Most Rev. Joseph H. Schlarman dedicated the new $225,000wing at St. Anthony's Hospital at a solemn High Mass this morning in the hospitalchapel.
1963 -- 50 years ago: Members of the Quad-City Genesius Guild opened a $7,000 funddrive at a meeting yesterday at the Hauberg Civic Center, Rock Island. The money willbe sought to convert the Denkmann Memorial Building in Lincoln Park into an outdoor,classic theater. The guild plans to occupy the building in June, abandoning its travelingstage in favor of a permanent base in Rock Island.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Otto W. Schweinberger, Black Hawk College Dean of ContinuingEducation and Community Services Programs, is retiring Aug. 31 after 25 years at BlackHawk and 36 years in education. His resignation comes at a time when the continuingeducation and community services program has been expanded districtwide. Theprograms he leaves later this year are considered vital to the future of the college.
