James Jay "Jim" Winter, 77, of Moline, passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline, following a courageous battle with lung cancer and multiple myeloma.
Funeral services will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, with visitation from 2 p.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made to Heartland Health Care Center or Heartland Hospice.
Jim was born June 17, 1935, in Belleville, Ill., the son of John and Thelma King Winter. He married Mary Anne Nelson on July 28, 1956. He later married Dixie Morrison Beckley.
He attended Rock Island High School and was a Union Sheet Metal Journeyman for over 30 years, retiring in 1998.
Jim drove race cars spanning three decades and enjoyed motorcycle riding. He liked watching and attending all motor sport racing events and air shows around the country. He was always willing to go and do anything fun.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie; children, Karen Hudson, Davie, Fla., Julie (Randy) Carlson, Viola, and Gregg (Tami) Winter, East Moline; grandchildren, Nikki (Rudy) Fox, Eric (Betsy) Carlson, Ryan Cook, Nick Carlson and Natalie, Kelsey and Brice Winter. There are five great-grandchildren; siblings, Gil (Kathy) Winter and Jacque Owens; stepchildren, Kim (Jim) Steinbrenner and Jody Beckley; five stepgrandchildren; and many special friends and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Tammy Sue; and brother, John.
