Work about to start on new airport hotel, rental car facility

Construction on a $7 million rental-car service facility at the Quad City International Airport could begin in June. The facility to service, store and maintain rental vehicles will be built on about six acres of green space near the main terminal.

MOLINE -- A new hotel and car rental facility should start this summer at the Quad City International Airport.

Tuesday, Dan Huber, president of Frontier Hospitality Group, told theMetropolitan Airport Authority of Rock Island County that construction on the new Holiday Inn Express just west of the entrance off Airport Road likely will start Aug. 1.

Mr. Huber said he expects the hotel design to be 90 percent complete by the end of the month and the bid package complete by June 14. He anticipates construction will take up to 10 months, with a targeted opening of May 1, 2014.

He said the project still needs FAA approval before construction can start and the land must be rezoned by the city of Moline.

Mr. Huber said the hotel will be custom designed with architectural elements reflective of the terminal.

Construction on a $7 million rental-car service facility could begin in June, assistant director of aviation Bryan Johnson said.

The airport board approved getting a $4.5 million loan from Blackhawk Bank & Trust to build the service facility, and approved a construction contract with Valley Construction Co. and tenant leases.

The airport has been saving money for years to build the facility on about sixacres of green space near the main terminal. It will be leased to Enterprise, Avis -Budget and Hertz to service, store and maintain rental vehicles, Mr. Johnson said.

According to the tenant leases, each company will pay the airport $40,618 in annual rent starting on the date of occupancy, through Dec. 31, 2025. The car rental companies will operate the facility and the airport will maintain the property.

Construction could take one year. Once it's complete, an existing service center on airport property will be demolished, Mr. Johnson said.

In other business:

-- the board approved an agreement with the city of Moline that allows the city to annex the Hampton Inn and site of the proposed Holiday Inn Express. In return, the city will provide the hotel and airport with infrastructure to support new and future development.

-- director of aviation Bruce Carter said the number of enplanements for April was 29,106, down 9.2 percent from April 2012.
