Press release submitted by Rock Island Co SWCD
Farm landowners in Rock Island County can sign up for conservation practices to address erosion and wet cropland issues under the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) sign-up that started May 13th.
Continuous CRP is focused on environmentally sensitive land and offers are not ranked against each other. Environmentally sensitive land may include, but is not limited to, agricultural land prone to erosion, pasture or agricultural land that borders river or stream banks, or field margins. Continuous CRP sign-up land eligibility requirements also take into consideration the type of conservation practice the owner wishes to install.
Accepted conservation practices include: grassed waterways, filter strips, contour grass strips, field borders for wildlife, shelter belts, shallow water areas for wildlife, wetland restoration, and bottomland hardwood plantings.
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a land conservation program administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In exchange for a yearly rental payment, farmers enrolled in the program agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve environmental health and quality. Contracts for land enrolled in CRP are 10-15 years in length. The long-term goal of the program is to re-establish valuable land cover to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and reduce loss of wildlife habitat.
Landowners can sign up at the Farm Service Agency office in Milan on Wednesdays when the FSA office is open or they can sign-up at the Aledo office Monday through Friday. For more information, contact your local FSA office.
The Rock Island Co Soil and Water Conservation District and USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service provide planning and technical assistance to the Farm Service Agency as part of an agreement between the agencies. For more information about the continuous CRP practices, contact the NRCS office in Rock Island at 309-764-1486, ext. 3.
