The Walldogs’ Host Committee is pleased to announce that the VFW Post #8078 is donating $4,000 towards a mural that will be painted during the upcoming Walldogs’ Meet. The mural will pay tribute to the Kewanee’s military history and the veterans. Fittingly, the mural will be located on the east side of the VFW’s building at 200 W. 5th St.
The mission of the VFW is to provide information about veteran affairs to vets and their families.
The VFW is involved in many community projects, including providing the color guard for ballgames at Kewanee High School for the last 30 years. Along with the Kewanee Veteran’s Council, the VFW provides the Honor Guard for military funerals and they have cooked pork chops for Hog Days since its inception. The VFW also makes financial contributions to organizations including Project Graduation and Little League and provide Christmas baskets for area nursing home residents each year. The VFW also sponsors an annual Christmas party for children and grandchildren of veterans from around Kewanee. The local VFW supports the Veterans’ Homes in Quincy and LaSalle, Illinois as well as the National Home.
In addition to sponsoring a mural, the VFW Auxiliary is sponsoring the luminaries that will be placed on downtown streets on Wednesday evening, July 10th. The organization is also providing lunch for the Walldog artists on Friday, July 12th along with the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Ladies Society.
Ron Saey stated, “I think I can speak for all our members—we are very excited about the event for our post and the community. The mural on the side of our building will be honoring our past heroes and the current membership will be leaving a legacy for future membership. We hope someday, there does not need to be a VFW, but for now, there is a need.”
