1889 -- 125 years ago: The Beth Sommerville dramatic company opened a week's engagement at Harper's Theater presenting a double bill including a drama and a farce comedy.
1914 -- 100 years ago: Crawford C. Carter, former star mile runner for Rock Island High School, won inter-scholastic honors at an invitational meet in Baltimore, Md., breasting the tape in the mile at 4 minutes. 32.6 seconds.
1939 -- 75 years ago: The Rock Island County Historical Society is making plans for a celebration in 1941 of the 100th anniversary of the changing of the name of Stephenson to town of Rock Island.
1964 -- 50 years ago: East Moline will continue to fight the paving of Moline's 34th Avenue after the Rock Island County Board of Supervisors yesterday afternoon approved the project following a maze of parliamentary and legal maneuvering.
