Black Hawk to host College for Kids
College for Kids registration packets have been distributed to schools in the Black Hawk College district. The program is for kids entering grades sixth through ninth who have scored 90 percent or higher on a Total Reading or Total Math or Social Studies or Science achievement test.
Once a student attends College for Kids, he/she is eligible through 9th grade. If an eligible child hasn't received a registration packet, contact the child's school office.

McKay to sign new novel Saturday
Tom McKay will sign copies of his new novel "West Fork: from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at The Book Rack, at 3937 41st Ave. Drive, Moline. The book is set in western Illinois and was published by East Hall Press at Augustana College.

Area libraries host D-Day programs
Robert Mueller, historian and author of "Fields of War," will present programs in recognition of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, at area libraries. Each lecture focuses on places and men from ordinary backgrounds who did extraordinary deeds, frequently dying in the process.
The Geneseo Public Library will host "The Airborne on D-Day" at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30. The Colona Public Library will host "The Men of Omaha Beach" at 4 p.m. that day, and the Rock Island Public main library will host "The Men of the Normandy Invasion" at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31. The programs are free and open to the public. .
The book won four national book awards including a Bronze Medal from the Military Writers Society of America. Fields of War:

East Moline American Legion and Auxiliary will hold poppy days May 16 and 17.

River Valley Library plans several events

All-town garage sales start Thursday in Port Byron
The village's All Town Garage Sale will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Maps with addresses of sales will be available at the River Valley District Library, 214 S. Main St.

Legion post to hold Memorial Day ceremony

Port Byron Historical Society meets today
The Port Byron Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at River Valley District Library, 214 S. Main St., Port Byron. Lawrence Bay will discuss the 100th anniversary of World War I being observed in Europe and Australia/New Zealand and ask if there is interest in doing something similar here, as well as observing the 75th Anniversary of World War II. Carl Palmer will discuss the quirks in the B-29 bomber.

Incoming freshmen invited to Monday event
United Township High School will host an Activities Fair in the school cafeteria for incoming freshmen and their parents from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monda. Information on clubs, athletic teams, and fine art programs will be available.

Civil War roundtable Monday
The River Valley 150th Anniversary Civil War Roundtable will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 26, at Port Byron Village Hall, 120 S. Main St. to discuss Civil War events in May of 1864, including Grant leading the Army of the Potomac into battles in the Wilderness and Spotsylvania and Sherman starting the Atlanta Campaign with a battle at Resaca. Colona Clothing Closet taking, distributing clothing
Colona's Clothing Closet will accept clean clothing donations from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Distribution for people who need clothing will be from 9 a.m. to noon May 24. Bring an ID proving Colona residency.

Recycling Center at RI County Fairgrounds to close
The recycling center at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds on Archer Drive and Avenue of the Cities has closed. People still can use the one adjacent to the East Moline maintenance garage, 1200 13th Avenue.

Benefit for Riverdale sixth-grader planned
A benefit for Riverdale sixth-grader Griffin Miller will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31 at Riverdale High School, 9622 256th St. N., Port Byron.
Griffin, the son of Jim and Michelle Miller, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last November and is undergoing chemotherapy in Iowa City.
The benefit will include lunch, a silent auction, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, xp360 obstacle course, a 22-foot, giant dual slide, children's games, a bake sale and a tour of the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department SWAT team vehicle.

BHASE Center collecting cans, bottles, box tops
Black Hawk Area Special Education Center, a school for special-needs students at 4680 11th St., East Moline, is accepting donations of cans, plastic bottles, Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education. Library friends hosting trip to Cubs game
Friends of the East Moline Library are hosting a bus trip to see the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers play on Aug. 14. Tickets cost $75 and include a game ticket and transportation.
The bus will leave from Motel 6 in Moline at 7:30 a.m. for the 1:20 p.m. game. Tickets must be paid for by July 1. To reserve a spot, stop at the library or call the library at 309-755-9614.
