Meeting will focus on Port Byron in WWII
The Port Byron Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at River Valley District Library, 214 S. Main St. in Port Byron. The program is "Port Byron In World War II," with a remembrance of Port Byron area men who served in the military, and discussion of life on the homefront. Sign-up deadline today for Carbon Cliff co-ed tournament
Today is the sign-up deadline for the Carbon Cliff Sports Club's co-ed slow pitch softball tournament and fundraiser Saturday. The cost is $60 per team for up to 10 players. Four females must be on the field. Pairings will be held at 7 tonight in the Carbon Cliff Park

Learn about BHC's professional, continuing ed programs Thursday
The 6th annual Black Hawk College Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) Open House will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Quad-Cities Campus, 6600 34th Ave., Moline.
The free event, in the Sustainable Technologies Building, which is accessible from Lot 1 off 70th Street, will highlight several programs offered by PaCE, and people will be able to talk with PaCE instructors about classes.
Fall schedules will be available and registration will be open during this event. For information on PaCE, visit bhc.edu/pace.

Colona activity and senior centers host Saturday open houses
The Colona Activity Center, at 617 8th St., and Senior Center, at 703 6th St., are holding health open houses from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The activity center hosts exercise and hobby classes, and housing for Colona's Clothing Closet and food pantry.
The senior center will offer blood pressure checks, foot checks and health info. Free "File of Life" packets will be available. Visitors will be asked to fill out a survey to assist the senior center with planning activities throughout the year.
Refreshments will be served.

Science Alliance Saturday at Geneseo library
The Science Alliance, a science edu-tainment company, will host "Close Encounters of the Chemical Kind" at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Geneseo Public Library, 805 N. Chicago St.. There will be displays of fire and liquid nitrogen, and kids can participate in some experiments.
The event is free.

East Moline Main Drag Car Show
The 8th annual East Moline Main Drag Car Show will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 23, on 15th Avenue between 7th and 13th streets in downtown East Moline. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. Participants must enter from 12th and 13th streets. Gate registration costs $10. Dash plaques to the first 100 vehicles. Spectators get in free. There will be 50/50 and door prizes. Food will be available. Proceeds benefit Main Street projects.

Crafters sought for Sept. 5 show
The GMC Auxiliary will hold a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Larson Center, next to Illini Hospital, Silvis. Ann's Helping Hand, 805 S. High St., Port Byron, is seeking a refrigerator, twin beds, junior clothes, jeans size 42/32 and 44/32 jeans, stuffed animals, Beanie Babies, and small toys and advertising items appropriate for prizes and take-home bags.
Store hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Cordova Library to host bus trip to Des Moines on Oct. 3
The Cordova Library will host a bus trip to the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines for the American Quilter's Society Quilt Expo on October 3. The bus will leave the library at 7 a.m. and return in late evening.

BHASE Center collecting cans, bottles, box tops
Black Hawk Area Special Education Center, a school for special-needs students at 4680 11th St., East Moline, is accepting donations of cans, plastic bottles, Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, and Prairie Farm Milk Caps. Colona Library offers free technology courses
The Colona Public Library is offering free six-week technology courses to library district residents.
Courses are being offered in a variety of technology-related subjects, from basic keyboarding and computer skills to training in various Microsoft Office applications, such as Word and Excel.
The schedule is flexible to accommodate people's home and work obligations. Preference is given to people who are unemployed or underemployed. Applicants for training must be 18 or older.
