Santa’s checked his list twice, and knows who’s been naughty and nice on the local prep basketball scene heading into his favorite holiday.
And the Moline boys have earned the biggest Christmas gift under the tree, in this season’s second installment of the Quad Cities Prep Basketball Power Polls.
The surprising Maroons have parlayed an 8-1 start — including an early 3-0 lead in the Western Big 6 Conference race — into joining their school’s female counterparts as our top-ranked teams.
This marks the first time in the two-season history of the local poll that one school has held both top spots in the rankings, presented by WQAD-TV 8, The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus.

The Rock Island boys and Moline girls are near-unanimous No. 1’s in this season’s first installment of the Quad Cities Prep Basketball Power Polls.
The Moline girls received all 13 first-place votes, and 130 voting points, from a panel of local sportswriters and broadcasters.
Rock Island came within one media-member’s vote of the same feat on the boys’ side of the poll, which is presented by WQAD-TV 8, The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus.
The only other team to garner first-place attention were the Sterling boys, who boast University of Illinois signee Joseph Bertrand. The defending NCIC Reagan champs received that lonely first-place nod, and 106 voting points, to open the local poll ranked second.
Rock Island and Sterling will settle the argument early, too. Sterling hosts Rocky on Saturday.
