From goats and black cats to curses and cursed fans, 100 years of Chicago Cubs baseball history looks more the fodder of fiction than it does bitter reality.

And for Cubs fans everywhere, this year has been every bit as unreal as the 100 years prior — 100 years of championship vacancy.

But with a World Series title at least an option as the Cubs begin playoff contention against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 5:30, millions of fans are declaring this to be “the year,” while millions of others are choosing to wait in trepidation before celebrating what might be.
